Ed and Al depart from the mansion after Ed is saved by Fletcher. Mugiar, stunned at the damage dealt to the lab, asks the Tringham brothers to use an alternate method to speed up the creation of the red stone. When Russell refuses, Mugiar reveals that he knows the Tringhams are not the real Elrics and captures them. Back at the tavern, Ed and Al learn about Nash Tringham, Russell and Fletcher's father. The original discoverer of the red water, Nash soon left the city and was never seen again after the townspeople began to develop a disease following his research.

The next day, the real Elric brothers are invited to research the red water by Mugiar. They agree, free the Tringhams, and corner Mugiar by asking about Nash. Mugiar responds by attacking the Elrics using the partial stone. With the help of the Tringhams, the Elrics overpower Mugiar, but he escapes to an underground lair. However, Mugiar collapses the underground passage, causing the red water to flood out of the spring. Fletcher, using his alchemy, makes the trees absorb the red water, neutralizing the threat. The Elrics say good-bye to the Tringhams, and board a train for East City.

Ed and Al take Winry shopping to try to cheer up. They enjoy themselves, but Ed receives his second assignment: inspecting the coal mines at the town of Youswell. Upon arriving in Youswell, Ed is kicked out of the single inn in Youswell because he's part of the State-Military. Lieutenant Yoki, the military commander in charge of the area, appears and tries to collect taxes from the inn but a riot erupts and Yoki nearly kills Kyle, the inn owner’s son before Ed appears and saves Kyle’s life. Noticing that Ed is a state alchemist, Ed is invited to Yoki’s mansion, where he is both flattered and bribed.

At night, the inn blows up, presumably by Yoki’s orders, and Al saves Kyle from under the rubble. Upon discovering the ruined inn, Ed transmutes the gold coins that Yoki attempted to bribe him with, and overlay the gold over coal bars. He then uses them to purchase the mine from Yoki under the guise of a money-less transfer. Ed then returns the bars to stone and sells the entire town to the people of Youswell for a single night stay at the inn, which he repaired. Yoki tries to fight back, but Ed easily defeats his alchemist, Lira, and becomes known as the hero of the people.

Ed, having passed the State Alchemy Exam, now is a "dog of the military." Mustang gives Edward a silver pocket watch, a symbol of Ed's rank and an alchemical amplifier. Edward writes a letter to Winry, his childhood friend, and Nina writes one to her mother, who disappeared two years ago and hasn't been responding to Nina's letters. Tucker, up for his State Alchemist re-certification, needs to pass or he cannot continue to care for his daughter. After Tucker's reluctance in answering Ed's questions concerning the talking Chimera that he created two years ago, Ed investigates at the Library, but is denied access. On the way out of the Library, Ed encounters a muscular dark-skinned man with an X-shaped scar on his face, and a strange tattoo on his right arm.

After Brigadier General Basque Gran finds out about Ed's investigations, he orders him to cease and desist, and that Ed and Al have to move out of Tucker's mansion. Ed, on a hunch, sneaks into the mansion with Al at night, and they head down to Tucker's lab in the basement, where he has just finished creating another talking-Chimera. Ed then verbally places the pieces of the puzzle together and reveals to Al (and thereby the audience) that Tucker used his wife for his first chimera, and this time he had joined Nina and Alexander into the chimera.

When Ed reveals all of this, he nearly kills Tucker in his rage, but is stopped by the military, who came to arrest Tucker and haul off the Nina-Alexander chimera. Ed uses Alchemy to crash the car and the Nina-Alexander chimera runs off into an alley where the man with an X-shaped scar is hiding. His tattoo reacts as he touches the creature, and he is able to understand her makeup. When Ed arrives at the alley, the man is gone and all that remains of Nina-Alexander is a blood-smear, the partial shape of a child's upper body and the lower body of a dog (Upper body showing a child's arms and hands and the lower body showing a dog's tail and rump) and the two being combined, of a body that's been torn apart from the inside by alchemy, when she was being defused, as the souls were separating.

Upon entering Majihal's village, they encounter a girl (whose appearance fools Ed and Al into thinking she's a paper boy) named Klose (pronounced like "clause") who tells them that a zombie has been murdering several of the villagers, her older sister being one of them. Klose petitions the brothers to avenge her sister's death, but Ed is skeptical of the whole situation.

Upon meeting Majihal, he tells the brothers that the mysterious zombie is believed to be a florist by the name of Karin, Majihal's former lover, who died in an accident several years ago. After some more investigation the brothers discover that Majihal has been attempting to revive Karin by using mannequins that look like her, and using Alchemy to attach the souls of the village girls he's kidnapped to the mannequins. Ed discovers that Karin has not died, but initially lost her memories and has aged. Once her memories returned, she sought out Majihal, but he was already possessed by his passions of reviving Karin to recognize her. Majihal refuses to accept the wrinkled old woman, who has been supporting him, as Karin, and attempts to kill Ed. In self-defense, Ed knocks Majihal's weapon out of his hand, which flies into the air and accidentally impales Majihal. Klose reverts to dressing feminine, and the brothers continue on their journey.

Quotes - Watch Online - Trivia

In a brief flashback two young boys, Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt to perform an Alchemical Transmutation.
Something goes horribly wrong. Alphonse disappears, Edward is seen missing his left leg, and a grotesque figure appears out of the Transmutation Circle.

The scene switches to the current day and the brothers are seen walking across a desert. They arrive at Lior, where they hear about a religious leader named Father Cornello who can invoke miracles.
Rosé, a young woman who works for Cornello, takes the brothers to him. When they see Cornello perform a "miracle," they realize he is performing Alchemy, but is ignoring the Law of Equivalent Exchange and think that the gem that Cornello has is the Philosopher's Stone. Feeling the pressure from the brothers, Cornello orders his right-hand man, Cray, to kill them.
Cray however fails since Al has no body, and Rosé, scared for her life after witnessing Cray shoot Al to no effect, runs to Cornello. Al and Ed chase after her, and Cornello attacks them when they arrive. His failed attacks reveal that Ed's right arm and left leg have been replaced by auto-mail; he then realizes the source of Ed's nickname: "The Fullmetal Alchemist", and that the brothers have committed the Ultimate Sin: a Human-Transmutation.
